At All Saints' Academy, we want our students and their families to feel informed and empowered, so they may actually enjoy the college search. Our goal is to help students identify and apply to colleges that offer opportunities and challenges that match their individual aspirations, needs, and interests.
Our job is to help open the world of possibilities to students as they explore their college options. Deciding which colleges are most appropriate can be tied to many factors: academic atmosphere, geographic location, diversity of the student body, athletic teams, arts offerings, extracurricular and internship opportunities, overseas studies programs, and financial aid. We help students sort through these considerations, so they may prepare thorough and compelling applications. College advising at All Saints' centers on the particular abilities, needs, and desires of each individual student and family. Our goal is for each student to be admitted into colleges that both appeal to the student and that also fit his or her academic, co-curricular, and personal profile. Ultimately, we believe that each student should control the self-evaluation, research, and application writing essential to good college selection.
In addition to maintaining day-to-day contact with students, the college advisors maintain contact with college admission representatives throughout the country by personally visiting college campuses and by attending professional conferences. On campus, All Saints' Academy offers extensive resources for students and parents in the area of college advising. A hallmark of All Saints', the college trip for the juniors, enables students to see college campuses and speak with college admission representatives.
Beginning in the junior year, students as well as parents meet with All Saints' college advisors in numerous one-on-one advising sessions and in small groups to review a variety of topics, including:
- using the Internet to research and apply to colleges;
- registering for standardized tests;
- helping students plan their personal calendar in regard to taking required standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, PLAN, and ACT with Writing;
- assessing online standardized test score reports;
- understanding the application process;
- providing tips on how to make the most of the college visit and interview;
- writing an application that best represents the student;
- writing a strong essay; and
- understanding the financial aid process.
In the senior year, the college advisors work closely with students to help them wisely choose colleges to which to apply and assist them in completing and submitting all testing and other application requirements in a timely manner.
